The 760 area code is an area code in California that was separated from the 619 area code on March 22, 1997.

The 442 area code is an overlay of the 760 that began on November 21, 2009. It covers most of southeastern and southern California. The area includes Imperial, Inyo and Mono counties, as well as parts of San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Kern counties.

The 760 area code was split from 619 in 1997, which in turn was split from the 714 area code in 1982. But within a decade of its creation, the proliferation of cell phones and pagers left 760 squeezed to the point that the new area requires the code for the area. The original plan was to further split the area code, with parts of San Diego and Imperial moving to the new area code 442. However, this was met with protests from businesses that did not want to again in their numbers for the second time in a decade. Finally, the California Public Utilities Commission decided to add 442 as an overlay to 760, and by 2009, all customers in the region must include the evh area code when making local calls.

Starting Saturday, that will no longer be an option. When making phone calls, those living in the 760 area code must dial the entire number, as if dialing long distance ---- even for local calls.

The 442 area code overlay, imposed by state regulators, became mandatory on Saturday after a six-month phase-in with optional dialing. The new numbers are assigned to area code 442; the current numbers will remain in the 760 area code.
Since both area codes will cover the same territory, the area code must be specified. This means that starting Saturday, those with the 760 area code will no longer have that comfortable seven-digit dialing experience.
Whether for calls across town or across the street, residents must dial the full number. It's 1 plus the area code plus the phone number for calls from traditional landlines; Calls from mobile phones do not need to dial 1 before the area code.
Geographically, the 442/760 area code overlaps nearly one-third of the state, from North San Diego County east to the borders of Mexico, Arizona, and Nevada, and north to Inyo and Monocounty.

Of course, the overlay requires many other settings. Some are quite obvious, such as including the full number of newly ordered business cards, stationery and checks.
Other changes are more subtle, including reprogramming all electronic devices that use phone numbers, such as automatic dialers, fax machines, alarms and security systems, and electronic which are telephone dial controlled gateways.
Businesses and individuals should also correct website phone numbers, school or doctor listings, and pet tags and IDs as needed.
The area code overlay was ordered last year by the California Public Utilities Commission to add more numbers for the region.
